Last weekend we stayed in Taupo for a bit of a holiday. On Sunday we were up early to visit Tongariro National Park and hopefully see some snow, but we stopped in Turangi to look for Blue Ducks on the Tongariro river. We weren’t expecting much, as previously we’d not seen any in the area, although it is a breeding site for them. However, a pair of them were waiting for us in a rather inaccessible bend in the river, and Dad and I did a bit of precarious rock-climbing to get down to water level to photograph them. The camouflage of these ducks is amazing – from a distance they look nearly identical to the rocks in the river. After our Blue Duck Hunt at the start of the year (which was only marginally successful), it was a great sighting and opportunity to get some closer photographs.
