Something new I did this year was photograph surfers while we were in Ballito. There was a huge competition on, and people would be out every morning before it started to enjoy the waves. It was a real challenge to get nice compositions with good wave action and surfing action! It was great fun though, and I envied the guys in the water with their cameras – I’d really like to get an underwater housing for my camera, but they are SO expensive. Definitely not on a student budget! More than anything it made me admire the strength and skill of the surfers – I’ve always been more of a casual body-boarder myself, but the way they move across the waves is beautiful.
