I’ve been taking a lot of photos with my phone this year. Partly because the quality of images out of an iPhone 5 vastly surpass that of the 4, and partly because it’s easy and on hand when I’m in the field. I was warned that I would have difficulty taking photos of my own fieldwork… and the times I’ve taken my DSLR with me it has stayed firmly in my pack. So phone photos and Fuji X100 photos have taken over for the moment. There’s a lot to be said for the camera that’s the easiest to use. when the view out the plane window is something stunning…
or the light is just perfect, but only for a few seconds….
when your study species is a burrow-nesting bird…
when you want to try some casual impressionism…
and spend some time channeling Monet…
when the goodest girl decides she wants to be your co-pilot…
when you want to play with slow-shutter speeds on the road home…
again, when the light is just perfect…
Really, the best camera is the one you have in your hands when everything falls into place, and you can make images without having to think.
