Escapism – to the Poor Knights

One of the reasons I love photography is that is provides me with clear windows into my memories – which get fuzzy over time and a little muddled. By having photographs of places that I’ve been, I can look at them and fall straight back into the memory of being there, the sights, the smells, the sounds. Right now this is pretty apt, because I’m housebound and far from my beloved ocean and islands.

So I’m going to take you with me on my own little escapist trip – to where I should be right now: The Poor Knights Islands. I’ve worked on the islands for two years, seen them through the seasons and watched how the nightlife changes as the seabirds go through their breeding seasons. Time out there is so precious, although after a two-week stint of all-nighters I do look forward to coming home to a proper bed! Not being able to get out there and collect data for my PhD is difficult, but luckily I have plenty of data from the rest of the season to work on for now. And I’m not that disappointed to be getting sleep at night!

  1. Wonderful trip to the Poor Knights Islands, felt I was out there with you. Love the photo of heron and wing fading into the cloud. Great escape.
