My Best bird photos of 2020

There had to be a companion post to last week’s musings over crap bird photography, right? Here’s my favourites from the year that was not, overall, my favourite. The silver linings. My favourites may or may not be my ‘best’ by anyone’s standard – but they’re the photographs that I love. And that’s the whole reason for photography.

Obviously we can’t NOT start with this photograph. It fills me with a quiet thrill every time I look at it. And I know you all love it too!
I can’t look at this photo without thinking “Boing! Hee-hee!”. Tūturuatu (shore plovers) are gorgeous birds.
This photo was the realisation of a goal I set myself after we came out of lockdown – a nice riroriro photo that encapsulated ‘spring‘.
This memory is just way too precious. A stunning view of Light-mantled albatross courting, shared with some quality people.
The lines in this are so satisfying, and getting a nice pan-blur shot is so rare! I love this photo.
Nothing like beautiful morning reflections…

Are these the best photos I took last year? Not all of them, no. Some of the best are hidden away for other projects, that you’ll find out about in time! But these are the ones that make me the happiest, at the moment, when I look at them. They spark joyful memories. If your photos aren’t doing that for you, then you need to ask yourself why you’re taking photos at all. At its core, your photography should bring you joy. You should enjoy it, and use it to cement beautiful memories in your mind.
