Otago Wildlife Masterclass November 2022

We had another stunning weekend in Ōtepoti for the Wildlife Photography Masterclass a few weeks ago!

I’ve not run a workshop in spring before, so it was interesting to see what the wildlife was up to compared to our trip back in May. Big highlights were seeing mama pakake (New Zealand sea lion) Mia and her yearling pup Sienna dozing on Alan’s beach, the tara (White-fronted tern) colony on Aramoana Mole, and of course our pelagic birding trip with Monarch Wildlife Cruises. We got very lucky and spied a hoiho coming ashore at Penguin Place – spring is a tricky time to see the few hoiho that make the peninsula their home as they’re in the middle of nesting, and not coming and going so frequently. You can check out Tony’s write-up of the trip here. If you’re keen to come along to the next workshop, which Tony and I are running, head along to the New Zealand Photography Workshops page here!

It’s a great time of year to be capturing images of terns with their prey for our citizen science research project!
